Does your roof need repairs or replacing? Whether it's tile, shingle, or metal, how do you know what roofing company to choose? With hundreds of roofers in the Central Florida area to choose from, the decision isn't always easy.
Just because you see a commercial or find a company on the internet doesn’t necessarily mean they are a reputable contractor. Making a decision just because of the low price, generally means you will get poor quality workmanship and products.
GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, known for their advancements in asphalt roofing shingles.
GAF understands the gap in today's contractors. Which is why they have made it easier for consumers to know they are hiring a roofing contractor who is qualified, has the expertise, provides exceptional service, and use the highest craftsmanship, and superior products.

Your roof is a big investment, and though you may not think of it very often, there are a few things you can do to extend its lifespan. In this weeks blog we continue our article on what compromises the life of your roof.
High Heat

Intense heat can be particularly hard on your roof, especially the sealants and caulk. Warping and cracking typically occur, which leaves your roof vulnerable to moisture and damage. The effects can be more evident when the cool nights meet with high temperatures during the day, causing contraction and expansion of metal and other materials.
Wind Damage
Strong winds are prevalent here in Central Florida, it is important to check for misplaced or missing shingles. As the saying goes, “Your roof is only as strong as the weakest shingle”. When one shingle is damaged, the whole roof is compromised.
Hail Damage
Our weather is unpredictable, hail can come out of nowhere and the damage to your roof isn't always visible. Look for dents or depressions (which aren't always evident), on asphalt shingles, metal flashing, chimney caps, siding, and skylight flashings.
GAF, North America's largest manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing, explains the most common types of hail damage?
Granule loss at points of impact, which may be accompanied by surface depression. Loss of mineral granules as an immediate or gradual consequence of storm damage can lead to the asphalt coating being directly exposed to the elements. This may lead to accelerated aging of the shingle. Therefore, granule loss is NOT just cosmetic damage, and “sugaring” — the process of adding loose granules to damaged shingles with asphalt cement — is not a permanent solution.

Cracks in the granule-asphalt surfacing, which may radiate outward from points of impact.
Cracks may be present especially if high winds blew the shingles back.
Exposed fiberglass mat, where hail shattered the granule-asphalt surfacing causing it to break away from the fiberglass mat.
Fractured fiberglass mat, which may or may not be immediately visible. A fractured mat may result in tears radiating out from the points of impact. Furthermore, hidden damage to the mat may later develop into cracks and tears in time as the shingles age.
Loosening of the self-seal strip. This damage may or may not be immediately visible and may weaken the seal integrity, creating the possibility of future shingle blow-off
Your best protection is a professional roof inspection
Having an experienced roofer inspect every aspect of your roof, ensuring the shingles are in good shape, remove any debris, and check the gutters, can save you time, money, and injury. Climbing up on the roof can be dangerous. In fact, in the United States over 2.1 million people went to the emergency roof for ladder related injuries, according to a study done by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine
Choose a quality roofing company

How long should my asphalt roof last? Is a question we often get here at Schick Roofing. While the answer depends on several factors, roofs don't last forever. Especially when it is exposed to Central Florida’s elements, intense heat, rain, hail, high winds, and humidity.
Surprising to many people, quality can drastically extend the lifespan of your roof, type of materials, installation/workmanship, and maintenance.
Your roof is a big investment, extending its life is paramount. We suggest regularly checking your roof for any issues several times a year, and especially after a strong storm.
Trees

Leaves and pine needles can quickly pile up on the roof, trapping moisture, eventually seeping into the shingles, the underlayment, and then the support beams, causing warping, rotting, and leaks.
Overgrown branches can break, damaging your roof. A good rule of thumb, is to trim branches within a 10 foot radius of your roof. Many insurance companies may require more.
Gutters
Pine needles, leaves, and debris can cause gutters to clog and water to back up. This water ends up flowing back under the shingles, which generate leaks. Make sure your gutters are cleaned out and water flows smoothly.
Long Term Damage from humidity
With our beautiful tropical environment comes the heat and humidity. This means the components of your roof will stay wet for a longer period of time. Fostering mold, mildew, and eventually rotting. Pay special attention to standing water or pooling on the roof.

Have you been putting off cleaning your gutters? We’ve all done it, but unfortunately, it doesn’t take long until it causes damage. Not everyone has the time during the holidays or is comfortable getting up on a ladder, so it's a good idea to contact the professionals at Schick Roofing. It is also the easiest way to have them cleaned.
Clogged gutters prevent rain water from flowing away from your home. Here are a few important reasons to have your gutters cleaned

Roof damage
When the gutter is filled with leaves and debris, the water has no where to go. Which means it stays on your roof, it doesn’t take long for mold and rot to set in.
Damage to Fascia
The fascia is a board located right behind your gutter. It is an important component to the gutter, but the overflowing water from a clogged gutter can damage it.
Keep Pests Out
Critters, such as mosquitoes and birds, find damp leaves and debris the perfect environment for nesting.
Cracks in the Foundation
If the gutters are clogged, the rainwater from our torrential downpours ends of overflowing. Then it pools around the foundation of your home, which can generate cracks
Damage to Brackets
Water can be very heavy, combined with debris, it can end up being too much weight for the brackets.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
This is a question we get asked often here at Schick Roofing. This depends on how many trees nearby. Typically gutter should be cleaned once in the Fall and in the Spring. But it you have lots of trees around your home, it should be more often.
Cleaning gutters is messy and a lot of work. It entails climbing a ladder, scooping out debris, so you should wear heavy work gloves. Be careful, you never know what could be living in the debris. If you find any problems, such as a leak, loose screws or nails, they will need to be repaired or replaces.

The holidays are the most wonderful time of year. With all the struggles we’ve had this year, it is time for a celebration. Those holiday lights are going up early this year. Schick Roofing wants to remind everyone the importance of safely putting up all those decorations.

“Never hang Christmas lights from your shingles. To properly put up lights, they need to be secured to something (that’s why it’s so easy to wrap them around trees). Making even the tiniest of holes in a shingle or roof component will let moisture or leaks in and potentially rot the roof. The best way to put up lights is with clips that hang from the gutter or eaves. Also, before you even climb up to work, untangle the strands and test them to make sure they all light up,” GAF
Though a few nails in your roof may seem harmless, it can cause significant damage to your roof. Nails leave behind holes that rain water and moisture will eventually find. Instead, invest in plastic hooks or clips with adhesive on the back, it will be a lot less expensive than repairing your roof.
Before installing decorations, it is a good time to clean your gutters and roof of any debris, leaves or branches. Also, test any lights or electrical decorations first to ensure they are safe to use.
When installing decorations or lights on your roof, never lift or move the shingles, the seal can easily be broken. You will quickly realize how important that seal was when the next time it rains.
When the holidays are over and it's time to take the decorations down, it can be very tempting to just pull it down with a few tugs. Since that can damage the roof, it is worth the time and effort to do it right.
Happy Thanksgiving From Schick Roofing

Thanksgiving is a time of festive spirit, mouth watering meals and renewing ties with family. The perfect time to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and reflect on what we’re thankful for.
The family at Schick Roofing wants to take this opportunity to thank all of our friends and clients for their support!
The thought of a leaking roof with our afternoon thundershowers and record number of hurricanes, can be overwhelming. While a new roof would give you peace of mind, repairs would be less expensive.

The lifespans of the roof depends on the quality of installation and that of the materials installed. Neglecting a roof with missing, curled, or cracked shingles can quickly lead to severe damage to both the building and your wallet. You also don’t want to worry about your roof making it through the next big storm.
If the roof just started leaking and only affects a small portion, a better choice may be to repair. But choosing to save a few bucks by just having your roof repaired when it needed to be replaced may end up costing you more in the long run.
If the leak has been going on for some time and you just noticed or the roof is older, the better choice may be replacing. Unfortunately, it is not always an easy choice, the professionals at Schick Roofing can help you make an informed decision, based on the damage, roofing material, and cost effective.
You’ll likely be able to repair your roof if there is a leak from an easily-identifiable source or there are only one or two shingles missing. Unfortunately, there are also signs that you’ll most likely need a replacement roof. You should talk to your roofing professional if:
Finding a reputable roofer to repair or replace your Orlando area roof may not be your idea of a fun time, but it is definitely an important one. The lowest bid isn't always the best one, quality installation and materials are what makes a roof with a long lifespan.
All roofs in Orlando need maintenance to ensure reliability, longevity, and to keep water leaks from happening. And yes, you want it to look great and have attractive curb appeal.
Severe storms, high precipitation levels, strong winds, exposure to the intense heat of direct sunlight most of the year, takes a toll on all roofs.
"Sooner or later, all roofing needs to be replaced. If shingles are old and worn, patching or limited repairs won't help when a hurricane strikes. If you know how long it has been since your shingles were replaced, that is a good starting point,” warns the Division of Emergency Management.
Regular Inspections Will Save You Money

Routine roof inspections can help prevent serious problems, just like tune ups for your car. Be on the look out for missing or damaged shingles or tiles, cracks, lifting shingles, moss growth, and removing any debris. If you’re not comfortable getting up on your roof, contact Schick Roofing. Moisture penetrating any part of the roof can cause deterioration, water leaks, and significantly shorten its lifespan.

It seems like there is a new named storm or hurricane every week. We all know the importance of preparing for a strong storm or hurricane, but knowing what to do once it has passed is just as important.
High winds don’t just happen in hurricanes, our afternoon thunderstorms are notorious for lifting, curling, tearing and even ripping off roofing shingles. Once a shingle is lifted the bond holding them together is broken. Leaving the underlayment or roof deck exposed to wind driven rain and humidity.
Hail is all too common with strong storms here in Central Florida. Leaving pockmarks and dents in shingles. They also allow the protective granules to dislodge, leaving your roof unprotected against the damaging rain and sun.
Here is a helpful checklist letting you know what to look for after a storm

Start off by walking around your home to access any roof damage. Take pictures of any obvious signs, such as missing, curled, or torn shingles.
Be aware of any hidden roof damage. Though shingles may appear normal, look for dents in roof vents and gutters, they can be concealing damage. Be alert to any torn screens, loose weatherstripping, or cracked windows.
Damage can be very sneaky. Then look for any water spots or leaks on the ceiling inside your home. With a flashlight in hand, check the attic, look for wet areas, a musty odor, or any light shining through.
Find a roofer you can trust. There are a lot of contractors in the Central Florida area, but not all of them are the same.
At Schick Roofing, integrity and a high standard work ethic is paramount to our business and the way we treat our customers. Our customer testimonials say it all.
