It's almost hurricane season here in Orlando, is your roof ready?  2022 is expected to have a higher than average hurricane season. With 13-16 named storms, 6-8 hurricanes, and 2-3 major hurricanes, according to the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project. Researchers said this is because the ocean temperatures are expected to be above normal.

It is important to ensure your roof is ready before that first storm! By the time you notice a water spot on the ceiling, deterioration has already started and the integrity of the roof could be compromised.

How Can You Prepare Your Roof For Hurricane Season?

Caution Sign in Front of Storm Clouds

A roof inspection is the first place to start. The qualified roofers at Schick Roofing have the experience and knowledge to reveal the life expectancy of your roof, detect any weak areas, go over any repairs that need to be repaired, and talk to you about how to secure your roof before the storms arrive.

Trim The Trees Around Your Home or Business

Trees near your home can be especially dangerous during a storm. According to Storm Struck, "Falling trees and limbs are a big safety hazard during storms. Trim your trees often and look out for older, week or diseased trees that could topple during a storm. Trim branches away from your roof to prevent damage."

Make Sure The Gutters On Your Roof Are Clean

Definitely not a fun job, but it is imperative to clean your drainage system on your roof before a hurricane.  Clean all the debris and leaves from the downspouts and gutter. If water starts backing up on your roof, it can intrude into your home.

Take A Good Roof At Your Roof Both Outside And Inside

You don't need to get up on your roof and walk around, but if you have a pair of binoculars it may make it easier to look at your roof.

On the outside of the roof look for and broken, warped or missing shingles, nails that have popped up, buckling or curling shingles, rust spots on flashing, and a large amount of granules in the gutter.

On the inside of your home, look for any stains or water spots on the ceiling, wet attic insulation, peeling paint, or any daylight shining through.

Your roof protects your home but also your family. Unfortunately, many homeowners often neglect their roof, what could have been an easy fix, can end up costing much more and reduce the life expectancy of your roof.

As a leader in the industry, we provide our customers with an honest and accurate assessment of their roof and affordable services.

Thinking about having your roof repaired or replaced before the rainy and hurricane season hits Central Florida? If you google “roofer near me” you can get thousands of results, but how do you know which one to choose? You want a quality roof, but you don’t want it to break the bank.

It is important to choose a reputable and honest roofer. Besides being a lot of scam artists in today's industry, a fly by night construction crew can end up causing more damage and end up costing more in repairs.

A Good Reputation Matters

Do your homework, research local roofing companies. Go on line an look up their reviews on Yelp, Facebook, Google, testimonials and their Better Business Bureau (BBB) score. Are they members of any roofing organizations such as GAF, North American's Largest Roofing Manufacturer or Central Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Association (CFRSA).

Choose a Roofer that is Local

Make sure the roofing business is not only local but has a permanent place of business here in Orlando. Companies who operate out of other cities or even states often times just disappear after a job is done. Which means if your roof starts to leak just a couple of weeks into the rainy season, they are long gone.

Ensure the Company is Insured and Licensed

It is never wise to hire an unlicensed contractor. If something happens there is very little repercussions, from structural damage to a leaky roof, you will have to foot the bill for another contractor to fix their mistakes. Also, make sure they have insurance, all it takes is one worker to slip and fall, then it is you and your insurance company taking care of things.

If it Sounds too Good to be True, it Probably Is.

Price isn't everything. Have you ever bought something and thought it was a fantastic price just to get home and realize why it was so cheap. A quality roof is an investment that can last over 20 years. The fact is, you get what you pay for. So, if you call around and find a roofing service that is significantly lower than anyone else's, it should raise some red flags.

Whether your roof needs replacing or just some repairs, Make sure it is a quality roofing service you can trust. Contact Schick Roofing for more information.

Check back with us next week, as we discuss important questions to ask a roofing contractor before you hire them

A new roof or roof repairs in Orlando is a major investment. It has many people asking themselves if they really need a new roof? Is it really worth it?

When a roof is compromised and the repairs or replacement is delayed, the damage gets worse, making the cost to repair it higher! It also lowers the value of the home.

Making repairs or replacing your roof is well worth the cost. There are many lasting benefits of replacing those old shingles.

Eye catching curb appeal

You can’t help but see your roof, in fact, it’s one of the most visible exterior features. If your shingles are missing, curled, loose, or worn, it really impacts the aesthetics of your home.

Today’s new roof technology and designs, makes it each to achieve a custom look without having to cost a small fortune.

There are a variety of colors and textures to complement your home’s exterior.

Boost the value of your home

A new roof adds protection and beauty. It also has a high return on investment. Home buyers are attracted to properties that are well maintained. It the roof looks properly maintained, it gives the impression the rest of the house will be maintained.

Improves Energy Efficiency

Advanced technology has created very efficient roofing materials. For instance, new shingles reflect the sun’s rays, rather than absorbing all that heat. This will keep your home significantly cooler during the hot summer months. Decreasing your electric bill and who doesn’t like that!

“A possible cause of higher cooling costs could be insufficient attic ventilation, requiring the cooling system to run excessively. In warm weather, inadequate ventilation will trap hot air in the attic, causing air-conditioning systems to work harder, or leaving your home's interior hotter and less comfortable. In both hot and cold weather, moisture in the attic can become trapped and condense on the rafters if it’s not insulated properly. This moisture can drip down onto the insulation and reduce its effectiveness, potentially increasing energy costs.” according to GAF, North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer.

Lasting Protection

Your roof is responsible for keeping your home safe from the elements. As the roof ages, it gets worn down, exposed to all the weather conditions, damage from leaks, moisture, and mold occurs.

Wow - could not be more impressed with Schick Roofing.  I'm a new homeowner living in my first home with a tile roof. He was such a wealth of knowledge.  My roof is in good shape so I did not need any extensive work done - but if i EVER had an issue with my roof, I would call Schick Roofing - from the moment I called, they immediately scheduled my visit from George, followed up with a reminder day of and George arrived on time, professionally  dressed and so easy to talk to - Totally a 5 STAR organization!   Thank you.   Jim

Instead of waiting for the signs of roof damage to creep into your home this Halloween, it is important to have it professionally inspected. With our extreme heat and rain here in Orlando, Schick Roofing has a few things to keep your eye out for. Making small repairs early can save you a lot of money in the long run.

After an intense storm, wind driven rain, or hail, take a good look at your ceiling and your attic for signs of a water leak. Discoloring, watermarks, and stains can be an indication of mold.

Roof leaks can be caused by a number of things, deteriorating flashing, inadequate underlayment, damage or missing shingles. Poor ventilation creates excess moisture trapped in the home, can cause the exterior paint to blister and peel.

If you are not comfortable climbing on their roof to look for damage, binoculars from the ground also work.

Here are a few common roofing issues to look for:

Check the edge of roof for damage, as well as the edging of skylights and the chimney.

Examine overhangs and under eaves for damage.

Look for any warped, torn, curled, cracked or missing shingles.

Check the joints and seems for any openings

Look for rusted or popped nails, as well as any stains around the nails.

Examine the roof for any sagging or unsound areas.

Check for any rotten eaves or fascia

Make sure the gutter is cleaned out regularly

Look for insect or rodent damage

Check for dark streaks or patches on the shingle

Examine the flashing around vents, pipes, seams and joints. This waterproof barrier breaks down over time and can compromise the roof’s integrity.

Look near down spouts for any roofing granules. The tiny stones on asphalt shingles are there for protection.

Check the vent boots for any cracks. These are air tight rubber boot is placed around the pipe to ensure moisture or rain water doesn’t get through. Over time, the heat of the sun and intense rain, can cause the boot to decay and crack.

When it comes to your roof, being proactive and taking action when you first notice signs of wear and tear, will save you money. Waiting until your roof has a water leak or damage, could end up costing more in repairs.

It may start out as a small stain on the ceiling or a few drops of water when it rains, but it typically means there is unseen trouble lurking.

It may be pretty easy to spot obvious roof issues. You may not even have to climb on the roof to see a missing shingle. Unfortunately, most roof damage isn’t visible to the untrained eye, which is why a professional opinion is so important.

What to expect from a professional roof inspection

During an inspection a roofer will look for any leaks, organic growth issues, damage caused by windblown debris, unusual wear and tear, and problems that may have happened during subsequent repairs or installation.

There are four basic aspects of a roof inspection, workmanship, interiors, materials, and structure.

Material Inspection

Roofing Problems

During this phase the inspector will be looking for any curling, missing, or loose shingles, missing fasteners, or flashing, seals around vent pipes, rubber boots, rust, moss and stains. The shingle’s aggregate will checked in the gutter downspouts and roof valleys. If shingles have lost a considerable amount of aggregate, they may be close to the end of their lifecycle.

Structural Inspection

During this phase of the inspection, the gutter system, fascia, and soffit, will be examined. As well as any signs of sagging, for uneven roof planes, damage to the chimney caps, and cracks in the chimney grout. The venting in your attic may also be checked. Improper venting can lead to moisture and heat buildup, both of which can significantly reduce the life of your roof.

Workmanship Inspection

It is important to catch any workmanship issues early. Red flags include incorrect flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vent pipes. Poor workmanship can lead to big issues down the road, such as leaks.

Interior Inspection

It is important to check the interior of the home. Such as the attic, interior walls and ceiling for water stains or mold.

Protect Your Home

A roof that has been compromised can put you and those around you, at risk for property damage. Our storms in Orlando have the potential for high winds, which can easily cause roofing materials to come loose and blow off. The last thing you want is to be liable for damage to your neighbor's car.

Save On Insurance Costs

Many insurance companies allow you to save money on your policy with regular roof inspections.

Most of all, regular roof inspections give you peace of mind. It is easy to put your roof on the back burner and just forget about it, but it is the first line of defense for your home and deserves the maintenance it needs.

Contact Schick Roofing to Schedule Your Roof Inspection

There are many effective tips that homeowners can follow to help maintain the quality and durability of their roof so that it can perform for its maximum lifespan. Regular maintenance can save you from having to replace your roof prematurely.

On the other hand, overlooking roof maintenance can be a very costly oversight, and one that we hope to help you avoid. In the article below, you will find 4 tips that help serve as a guide to be certain that your roof and drainage system are functioning properly.

Have your roof inspected regularly

Routine inspection by a professional will catch small issues before they become big costly problems. This includes checking for damaged or loose shingles, replace loose or missing roofing nails. As well as, inspecting the structural integrity, materials, interior, and workmanship of the roof.

“When homeowners place blind faith in their roof and neglect it completely until the first sign of a leak appears in the ceiling, they could already be facing much larger problems—unwanted structural issues, mold growth, or damaged insulation, for starters. Spare yourself a headache down the road by having your roof periodically inspected,” Bob Vila.

Stay on top of repairs

If you discover any roof issues or damages, it is important to have them repaired in a timely manner. Also, be mindful of signs your roof needs repairs. Shingle granules on the ground, water stains on the ceiling, missing shingles, or a sagging appearance.

Ensure the roof is properly ventilated

Proper ventilation is vital here in Central Florida for roof durability. Poorly ventilated roofs are subject to increased energy consumption, excessive heat and moisture. This can cause shingles to buckle, and the rot of rafters and sheathing.

Keep your gutters and roof free from debris

It may not seem like a bit deal, but removing moss, vegetation, leaves, and small branches from your roof and gutters can significantly increase your roof's durability.

If you are concerned or have questions about your roof, please remember that our experienced staff is here to serve you. We would be honored if you would choose Orlando’s Schick Roofing for all of your roofing needs.

In last week's blog we talked about repairing your roof yourself. While it may seem like you are saving a couple of bucks now, but it will probably cost you down the road. Having a professional install your roof or make repairs will give you peace of mind the materials are installed right and under warranty.

A few missteps when DIY roof repair include, using the wrong materials, reusing the flashing, and voiding the warranty. Here are a few more:

Underestimating how long the project will take

Most DIY projects, such as painting a room or installing a backsplash, can endure a delay without any issue. But if even a small portion of your roof is left exposed to the elements, rain and sun, it can cause damage. A professional will complete the job in a timely manner.

Using incorrect techniques

Having the right equipment and know how is important. Ripping off old shingles without damage existing ones, properly nailing the shingles, proper underlayment, and techniques, all play an important role. Improper installation can compromise the integrity of the roof.

Finding a roofer you trust can be difficult. According to a report by the Better Business Bureau, a shocking 73 percent of homeowners don’t trust home improvement contracts. So, for those who feel they are pretty handy and can do the work themselves, GAF has a warning.

They may seriously damage their roof. At their most innocuous, improperly nailed roofs can result in ripples, lifted shingles, and leaks. On the more serious side, there is potential for roof collapse and even bodily harm. A DIYer may have replaced a few shingles here and there, but they need to understand that roof work is a whole different animal.

Improper installations result in so many roofing replacements that manufacturers often won’t cover a roof that isn’t installed by a licensed contractor.
