There are many factors that determine how long your roof will last, such as the design, materials, installation, maintenance, and climate. Unfortunately, even the highest quality roof won’t last forever.
How do you know when it is time to replace your roof? Look for these signs
Curling, lifting, or buckling shingles
When shingles start to buckle, lift, or curl at the edges, it compromises the watertight barrier, unfortunately this cannot be reversed. If it affects several shingles, it is a sign your roof may need to be replaced.
Granule Loss
When asphalt shingles start losing a lot of granules it typically means the end of their lifespan is in sight. These granules are designed to protect your the shingle from the elements. These sand like granules may be found on the ground near the perimeter of the home or in the gutter.
Mold or algae growth
All the rainfall and humidity in Central Florida makes roofs susceptible to mold and algae growth. Even a small amount of this greenish or dark red growth can compromise a roof. Mold can seep into your home, causing health problems, and shorten the lifespan of your roof considerably.
Blistering shingles
A build up of moisture or gas can cause shingles to blister. This can occur because of natural aging, an attic that is not properly ventilated, or exposure to the sun’s intense heat. They all can cause small holes or cracking in the shingle, which causes them to blister and water to flow into the flashing and ultimately into your home.
Stay Proactive
If you notice any damage ensure it is repaired in a timely manner. Proper roof maintenance can increase the longevity of your roof, it can also save money on remodeling and even utility cost.
Your roof goes through a lot of wear and tear in Central Florida's harsh weather. Unfortunately, it will have to be replaced at some time and when it does you want a trusted roofer.
As a leader in the industry, Schick Roofing provides our customers with an honest and accurate assessment of their roof and affordable services.
Your roof is a big investment, when it's time to make repairs or replacement, it may be tempting to do it yourself. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
Are you really going to save money on your DIY roofing project?
We all want to save a few bucks, but will replace or repairing your roof yourself save you money? The answer is probably not. Sure, you may be able to replace a few missing or worn shingles, but tearing off just a section of your roof is another thing.
Not only is it a lot of work, you need to be aware of any problem areas and what type of damage to look out for. Failing to spot a problem, can mean extra cost down the road.
Hiring a professional means the job is done right, if any issues arise an expert can evaluate the problem and advise on the most cost effective way to repair it.
Also, a professional is able to get the materials at a less expensive cost and pass this saving to you.
You void your warranty
Most manufacturers of roofing materials won’t guarantee these materials if not installed by a licensed roofing contractor. Why? A misuse or botched installation with the materials will eventually lead to a damaged roof and costly repairs.
So, if may seem like you are saving a couple of bucks now but, it will probably cost you down the road. Having a professional install your roof or make repairs will give you peace of mind the materials are installed right and under warranty.

When it comes to roof repairs or replacement in Central Florida there are many questions. One of the most popular is about materials, such as tile and asphalt shingles. Last week’s blog we went over the pros and cons of tile roofs. This week we are going to talk about shingles.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material. The base is made from fiberglass or organic, that is coated with asphalt and then saturated on one side with minerals to resist weathering.
Pros Include:
Budget Friendly
Typically, asphalt shingles are more economical and relatively less expensive than tile. Though there are many varieties to choose from with varying prices.
Easier installation
Shingles tend to be easier to install, so there are quite a few companies who provide this service. But don’t just choose anyone, the manufacturer’s warranty is dependent on who installed the shingles and the manner in which they did it. So, the type of shingle you choose is just as important as who installs them.
Durable
When properly installed, asphalt shingles are less likely to break during inclement weather or someone walks on them.
Variety of designs and styles
Today’s shingles come in a wide variety of colors and styles, to enhance your home.
Cons Include:
Various Lifespan
The life span of a shingle roof is typically between 20 and 50 years, depending on the quality of material and installation. The lifespan of the roof is reduced if maintenance isn't performed regularly.
Cooling down your home
If you are thinking about the traditional dark shingle, just know they form a heat barrier, but doesn't allow your roof to promote airflow. Once heat is trapped in the home, it is difficult for it to escape. Which can mean it will take more energy to cool the home, leading to high electric bills. You may want to look into lighter colored shingles with an Energy Star rating and Cool Roof technology. It can go a long way in cutting energy usage.
Which roofing material is best for your home or business?
There are pros and cons for every roofing material. Don't forget to contact your insurance company, many give great discounts for this type of home improvement

Whether you are replacing a roof or repairing one here in Central Florida, the question of what roofing material is best, asphalt shingles or tiles? There are Pros and Cons for both. Either one you choose, make sure you contact a reputable roofer.
Tile
Tile roofing material is the most popular worldwide, it can be dated all the way back to the 14th century. Tile is known for its durability and attractive look.
Pros include:
Long Lifespan - A tile roof can last 40 to 50 years.
Energy Efficient - Roof tiles are efficiently placed, allowing for easy airflow and resisting heat, both of which are very important here in Central Florida. This allows your home to have an easier time staying cool.
Heat Resistant - Tiles won’t rot in our hot and humid environment, they are also fireproof.
Designer Element - Tiles have a unique feel. The aesthetics can range from a southwestern flair or a tropical paradise.
Cons Include:
Heavy - Tiles can get pretty heavy, so your home or business will need to be able to support the weight. New lighter tiles are becoming available.
Fragile - If someone walks on your roof, clay tiles are likely to crack and break if not very careful.
Cost - From an appraisal standpoint, tile roofing materials have the best value. On that note, they are also a more expensive roofing option.
Maintenance - The felt underlayment, that goes under the tiles, will need to be replaced every 15 to 20 years. This is because the tile roof is not waterproof.
Keep in mind, some communities and HOAs have rules and regulations to follow when it comes to a new roof or repairs.
Check back with us next week when we go over the pros and cons of asphalt shingles. Until then, if you have any questions or want to make an appointment, contact Schick Roofing.
Our Dedicated and service-oriented staff is here to provide you with top notch workmanship and consistent communication to ensure roofing your home or business is a pleasant experience.
All of our rain and humidity here in Orlando create the perfect condition for mold to grow on your roof. You say, what’s the big deal, it’s just a little mold. But it just takes a little bit of mold to damage your roof, generate costly repairs, and just make your roof look unattractive.
Mold is typically the result of algae growth, moss, and lichens, which all thrive in shady and moist conditions. The problem occurs when the mold sets in and starts to rot your roofing materials.
Roof damage
If mold is allowed to continuously feed on your roof, rotting the wood and eroding the asphalt shingles, it can become unstable and require repairs or even replacement. To avoid this, have your roof professionally cleaned and inspected regularly.
The longer mold is allowed to grow on your roof, the harder it is to remove. Every time it rains, some of the mold washes off and can end up getting tracked into your home, which can create health issues.
Curb appeal
Nobody wants an ugly roof, dark streaks are very unsightly. Having a professional clean your roof will boost your home’s curb appeal.
Don’t just think you can power wash your roof or spray bleach on it, that would do more harm than good. It is important to have a professional roofer uses a 'soft water' cleaning method, which is recommended by the Roof Cleaning Institute of America. The residual effect of the biodegradable solution used to clean the roof will keep it looking great and prevent future algae growth for some time.

While fascias and soffits may not be part of your roof, they both serve a distinct purpose. They are both installed along the roof line, close to each other, but they play completely separate roles.
What is the fascia?
The fascia is a board located just under the roof line, at the edges of the roof. It is typically looks like a flat piece of trim, just a little wider than normal trim, but from the same material.
The fascia is known as the last line of defense, protecting your rafters and roof line from the elements. It helps keeps the wind and rain from getting under the roof line.
It is also how the gutters attach to the house. Wood is usually what the fascia is made from, but they can also be found in vinyl, aluminum and PVC.
What is a soffit?
The overhang extends past the walls of the house adds an extra layer of protection. The soffit covers under the overhang, without it you would see the eaves and rafters.
It protects the attic and roof deck by blocking moisture, rain, and wind from entering the attic, which can cause significant damage.
Soffits are typically perforated to enable air to circulate and reduce moisture. By eliminating condensation you can avoid issues such as wood rot and mold.Without a soffit, rodents, insects and other pets would gain access to your attic.
When was the last time you really looked at your roof, fascias, and soffits?
The cooler weather is the perfect time to walk around and inspect your home. Look for any crumbling or loose wood, peeling paint, stains, and sagging gutters. It’s important not to put off any repairs.

Just a Reminder
When the holidays are over and it's time to take the decorations down, it can be very tempting to just pull it down with a few tugs. Since that can damage the roof, it is worth the time and effort to do it right.

Not everyone has the time during the holidays or is comfortable getting up on a ladder, so it's a good idea to contact the professionals at Schick Roofing. It is also the easiest way to have them cleaned.
Clogged gutters prevent rain water from flowing away from your home. Here are a few important reasons to have your gutters cleaned
Roof damage
When the gutter is filled with leaves and debris, the water has no where to go. Which means it stays on your roof, it doesn’t take long for mold and rot to set in.
Damage to Fascia
The fascia is a board located right behind your gutter. It is an important component to the gutter, but the overflowing water from a clogged gutter can damage it.
Keep Pests Out
Critters, such as mosquitoes and birds, find damp leaves and debris the perfect environment for nesting.
Cracks in the Foundation
If the gutters are clogged, the rainwater from our torrential downpours ends of overflowing. Then it pools around the foundation of your home, which can generate cracks
Damage to Brackets
Water can be very heavy, combined with debris, it can end up being too much weight for the brackets.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
This is a question we get asked often here at Schick Roofing. This depends on how many trees nearby. Typically gutter should be cleaned once in the Fall and in the Spring. But it you have lots of trees around your home, it should be more often.
Cleaning gutters is messy and a lot of work. It entails climbing a ladder, scooping out debris, so you should wear heavy work gloves. Be careful, you never know what could be living in the debris. If you find any problems, such as a leak, loose screws or nails, they will need to be repaired or replaces.

The holidays are the most wonderful time of year. With all the struggles we’ve had this year, it is time for a celebration. Those holiday lights are going up early this year. Schick Roofing wants to remind everyone the importance of safely putting up all those decorations.
“Never hang Christmas lights from your shingles. To properly put up lights, they need to be secured to something (that’s why it’s so easy to wrap them around trees). Making even the tiniest of holes in a shingle or roof component will let moisture or leaks in and potentially rot the roof. The best way to put up lights is with clips that hang from the gutter or eaves. Also, before you even climb up to work, untangle the strands and test them to make sure they all light up,” GAF
Though a few nails in your roof may seem harmless, it can cause significant damage to your roof. Nails leave behind holes that rain water and moisture will eventually find. Instead, invest in plastic hooks or clips with adhesive on the back, it will be a lot less expensive than repairing your roof.
Before installing decorations, it is a good time to clean your gutters and roof of any debris, leaves or branches. Also, test any lights or electrical decorations first to ensure they are safe to use.
When installing decorations or lights on your roof, never lift or move the shingles, the seal can easily be broken. You will quickly realize how important that seal was when the next time it rains.
When the holidays are over and it's time to take the decorations down, it can be very tempting to just pull it down with a few tugs. Since that can damage the roof, it is worth the time and effort to do it right.
